Hello! My name is Kever Conyers III

(pronounced Key-ver)

My interest in photography was sparked in my early teens. One day, while nosing around in my parent’s garage, he came across some old black and white prints. Some images showed a city in tumult. Buildings were burned and streets were littered with debris. I asked my parents about them. My father said they were pictures he took of the Harlem riots in 1964. He created images that told a story. I was hooked. After my father taught me the ends & outs of making a photo, as well as darkroom developing, I began making pictures with a 35mm Ricoh. My father passed his on to me. It was the same camera he used to photograph the 1964 riots. Twenty plus years later, I still have that camera and I am still making pictures.

Currently, my work is a combination of two passions: urban landscapes and the people who embody them. Memphis (my current home) is an old city with older memories. It provides preciously deep wells of history and culture. Both of which inform my contemporary photography. I walk the streets almost every day and find something beautiful and new in the forms, lines, textures, colors of the city. Often, I strike up a conversation with people in passing and I ask if I can make a portrait of them. My photos often demonstrate the different ways people struggle, celebrate, and negotiate city life.

I use images to try and tell a story. I hope my work can act as catalyst to bring people together, helping a diverse audience find common ground in the beauty that is all around us.
